Many times when I introduce myself as a Feng Shui consultant I get the same reply: “So you are an interior designer then.”

The Feng Shui term has been confused with the term interior design on so many levels that I feel I should explain a bit more. The easiest way to describe the difference is that interior design aspires to make a place look good and Feng Shui on the other side pursues to make a place feel good. Often these two goals go hand in hand, but not always.

Events that happen in your daily life, either good or bad, are energy or Chi reflections from the environment; whether it’s your home or your working space. The very same energy that flows and maneuvers within the space has a direct influence on the biography, biology and spiritually of your life.

If you are in a healthy status, you are in a relationship with your partner and you are content with your career, perhaps the energy in your space is in balance.  On the other hand, if you are having difficulties to find a partner, struggling with your health for various reasons, including insomnia and headache, not being happy with your profession, or just generally not feeling well for any specific reason, possibly the energy in your space is imbalanced and the chi is not flowing right in your home.

Here are few easy steps to follow:

Yin & Yang: Make sure there is a balance between the Yin and Yang in your space and emphasize one of the elements more depending on the purpose of the room.

For example, if you are considering redecorating the bedroom, the nature of this room is Yin, and the purpose of this room is sleeping. I have seen bedroom walls all colored in red or orange (yang colors) and the residence of the bedroom wondered why she couldn’t sleep.

To pronounce the Yin you might want to use more smoothing colors with just a pop-up of a Yang colour. In this way there is a balance between energies and you will have a better chance for a deep and resting sleep.

On the opposite site, if you are redoing your working space, Yang energy is what you need. Introduce Yang elements with a dash of Yin colour. This is vital to create a sustainable Chi for this room.

Keep in mind, what looks good doesn’t necessarily mean its good for you.
